Requirements

  • Are you a Lea Castle enthusiast?
  • Do you know about Lea Castle?
  • Do you know about the history of the town of Portarlington?
  • Do you like playing with words, styles, and rhythms?
  • Do you have a great imagination?
  • Would you like to share your passion for writing or simply tell us about a great Pastime | Past Times?

If you answer yes to any of the above – this competition is for you!

As part of this year’s Portarlington Heritage Week theme “Past Times | Past Times”, Lea castle Conservation Committee is sponsoring a Short Essay Competition.

When we think of Medieval times and the Dark Ages, a picture of overcast days, damp castles, slaving peasants, and dungeons. However, the people in the Middle Ages loved parties, events, feasts, games, sports, and fighting. Like us, they enjoyed having a good time – or did they. Who had a good time?

One submission per person.

There will be three categories of participants- under 13 and under 18, and over 18. Please indicate the category of your entry.

Don’t forget to show originality and passion for Lea Castle and its place in the history of Portarlington and County Laois.

Submit your Short Essay before Friday 2nd August at 17.00

Let your imagination rip

Write a story about an event linked to Lea Castle. All genres are accepted (autobiographic, romance, adventure, nature observation, humorous, thriller). The link with Lea Castle should be clear in your text but does not have to be central

How to enter the competition

The text should have a title and not exceed two pages. It should be published on a document featuring the underlined title (Times New Roman, 14) and the body structure (Times New Roman, 12, double spacing).

Rename your document (Word or PDF) with the title of your text and the title only. For example, “LeaCastle.doc” or “LeaCastle.pdf”. No names should be written on the document or document title, so the competition remains anonymous and fair for everyone.

Prizes

The adjudicators will be a panel nominated by the Lea castle Preservation Committee.
Prize money under 13 – €150,
Prize money under 18 – €200
Prize money over 18  – €250

By pariticpating, in the competition, you are agreeing to the publication of the story on our website and Facebook pages. By entering the competition you agree to allow the Lea Castle Conservation Group use your entry to promote the aims of the group.
